What is Tanning Supplements?
Tanning supplements were ineffective in the 80s, when they were first developed, as they often turned skin orange. Now mechanisms have become much more sophisticated, with supplements usually maximising the natural process of tanning. This is achieved through stimulation of the production of melanin. MaxiTan, for example, contains amino acids that help your body make melanin more efficiently. Tan-aid also works via amino acids, providing Tyrosine, for Melanin synthesis, and the crucial vitamin co-factors used during the creation of Melanin.
Sunny Side, in contrast, uses natural Beta Carotene to advance the skin’s pigmentation process for a better tan. It moves from the digestive tract to the blood and is stored under the skin in fatty tissues. Human skin renews itself every one to two months, as the outer layer sheds. A regular intake of Sunny Side forms a layer of Beta Carotene beneath the skin, which gradually reaches the upper layer of skin. This creates a deeper and longer-lasting tan. Beta Carotene is also a source of vitamin A, boosts the immune system and acts as an antioxidant, which prevent against the effects of free radicals (potentially damaging by-products of the body’s metabolism). Free radicals can cause cell damage that may contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease and cancer. Sunny Side also contains Vitamin E, which has these antioxidant properties. Sunny Side should not be used if you are pregnant, nursing, taking prescription medication or if you have an existing medical condition: consult your physician first.
Supplements are usually taken twice daily with meals for two weeks prior to a holiday and during your days in the sun to maximize your tan. You can take one capsule a day for longer periods to support your tan or help deal with skin ailments. However, individual brands differ considerably. So check on the label for the correct dosage. Some supplements claim to work without the normal tanning regime of sunbathing or sunbeds. Most supplements can be ordered online and shipped to your residence. UK brands cost roughly 15 pounds for 60 supplements, exclusive of shipping.
Supplements claim to be the healthier route to tanning, as they do not carry the risk of skin cancers, premature ageing and skin drying that tanning usually does. However, if beta-carotene is used in your supplement make sure it is derived from a natural source, as it has been shown in trials that the use of synthetically-produced beta carotene in supplements increases the rate of lung cancer and prostate cancer, and increases mortality in smokers. Beta-Carotene is colorant contained in many orange juices. Therefore, there is a risk you might get orange skin with this supplement. Always read reviews on your supplement before you go ahead with a purchase.
Tanning supplements are often combined with other beauty or lifestyle boosters. Slim Tan is a thermogenic fat burner combined with tanning enhancers. Quick Tan increases your energy levels and makes you tan more efficiently.
